Mouse Print*-- Getting So Many Search Results Makes Shopping Harder

mouse print Years ago, MrConsumer remembers going to Sears and finding 40 or 50 different models of Kenmore vacuum cleaners. How can anyone deal with all those choices? The same is true online with various etailers' search engines. You may get hundreds or thousands of choices, both relevant and irrelevant -- way too much to sort through. That is our Mouse Print* story this week.

What Do You Think About Retailers Locking Up Goods?

Tide locked up More and more supermarkets and drugstores are putting high value products behind locked glass cases to prevent shoplifting. [Alternate link] The strategy is backfiring. It can result in a loss of 15-25% of sales. How do you feel about products in locked-up cases? Take our survey:

Study: Most People Overpay for Cell Service

cellphone Over half of people have a cell plan from one of the big three carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon). That's the first mistake if you really want to save money. Switching to an MVNO can save you a bundle. An MVNO is an independent company that buys cell service from one of the big three carriers and resells it under their own name usually at a big discount. Another mistake is buying an unlimited data plan when you don't really need it. Here's the story about the study. Be sure to see our Bargain of the Week for the deal of the decade on an unlimited cell plan.

Fond Remembrance of Phil Donahue

Phil Donahue In 2007, MrConsumer ran up to Phil Donahue after he spoke at a special movie screening to thank him for being a role model for me. When I give speeches, I learned to go out in the audience, mike in hand, and interact with the crowd, as he did. As everyone left the movie theater that night, Phil was coincidentally next to me and commented that he could hardly hold all the "swag" they gave him for speaking. In true consumer form, I reached into my back pocket and gave him a plastic shopping bag that I always carry. That day was very special for me. I will miss this talk show legend. He was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom just three months before his death. Here's the hard-to-watch video.

Is Iced Tea Good for You?

Freshly made iced tea can have many of the same health benefits as hot tea, namely the potential to improve heart health and lower the risk of conditions such as cognitive decline and diabetes. The same can't be said for many bottled iced teas, according to Consumer Reports.
